Children & Young People

As with adults, all children and young people are unique. When working face to face, I provide numerous tools which may help the child or young person become a little less nervous, to help with distraction while talking, and to allow the therapeutic relationship to build. As with adults, the therapeutic relationship is extremely important to develop.

I work online with Young People aged thirteen upwards. Twelve and under I prefer to work face to face only, as I believe it has a greater impact on the therapeutic relationship. If you would like to discuss this, that's absolutely fine. Feel free to send me an email and we can book in a phone call to discuss.

Although I am not a Play Therapist, I bring aspects of Play Therapy into my work with children and young people, derived from my 10+ years of working with children and young people therapeutically.

Bringing aspects of play, which includes tools from doll houses and Lego to using card  games, allows the child or young person to build their confidence within the therapy room, to build trust with myself, allows them to express themselves and communicate in ways which work best for them, allows for emotional regulation, enables them to express trauma, and can help to lower anxiety. It allows the expression of emotions, to work on building coping mechanisms and strategies, and allows for therapeutic work to take place.

I realise 50 minutes may be a long time for children and young people to be in session, so a time frame can be discussed and altered as the counselling work progresses; ensuring the child/young person's voice is heard throughout.
